Bio

Ivo Cotani is a versatile artist: painter, performer, speaker. He grew up in Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He deepens his studies in Madrid. At the same time he obtained his theater diploma, starting to work as an actor and create plays as an author. Between 2012 and 2023 he exhibited in various group and personal exhibitions. Since 2019 he has created and is the artistic director of the “PHERSU Festival”. He also holds Masterclasses on Creativity and Movement. He lives and works between Ascoli, Rome, Treviso and Madrid. Cotani finds himself totally similar in the art-game relationship, if a style is naive and light, childish and kitsch, fast and fresh, defusing the obligatory link between form and content, unconsciously elaborating short circuits, ending up by showcasing the bittersweet and irreverent of life.

Artist Statement

Art shows possibilities and discovers new worlds, invades places and longing for non-places, for me the multifaceted artistic dimension is an invitation to the future and an opening to the new.

I find myself totally akin in the art-game relationship, my style is naive and light, childish and kitch, fast and fresh: the aesthetics of my works are strongly linked to the imagery of the Joie de vivre. Despite the jovial and harmless impact, I enact ambiguous and vicious visual scripts: naive putti pissing, idle Greeks intent on knotting together in cumbersome orgies.

I defuse the obligatory link between form and content, unconsciously I work out short circuits that only the image allows me to design, ending up showing the bittersweet meaning of life.

The mediums I use look to the present, I try to use the forms of analogue communication such as industrial and advertising printing, which have crossed the collective imagination of our daily life for over a century. Advertising aesthetics is a narrative ploy that allows me to structure a thought, criticize details of society, make visible some symptoms of discomfort. I often find myself concluding a work by looking for the sign action, the gesture, pictorially intervening on the different supports used.

I try to give life to places that cannot be described in words, and to demonstrate the infinite universe beyond what we call normality. I feel the creator and spectator of what I create, while I create it, I don’t believe in the division between art and life. The only space I leave is for the imagination.

That’s all that lights up my life.
