Online Residency 2023
Artist Statement
Mariam was raised between Venezuela, the Middle East and Pakistan. She completed her degree in Fine Art from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi in 2010 before moving to Dubai to work with The Third Line (TTL). TTL champions contemporary Middle Eastern art and artists locally, regionally and internationally. As Communications Manager at TTL, Mariam provided exposure for artists in the media through relationships with curators and writers. In 2013, Mariam relocated to London and began work as Gallery Manager at Edge of Arabia, an exhibitions and production platform for artists working in the wider Middle East. After hosting a number of successful exhibitions and events, locally and internationally, it became clear that the traditional gallery model was not serving the interests of the budding artist-collector relationship. In 2015 Mariam founded Bahaar; an online sales platform for emerging art from South Asia and the Middle East. Bahaar aims to connect emerging artists from the region with young collectors globally. More recently, Mariam has been a devoted mother to her two daughters and started her studio practice again working between the Putney School of Art and her home studio. Mariams current work investigates female emotional capacity and physical resilience. Looking into the space that is unknown to our present self yet most familiar to an infant. Exploring the uneasy feeling between personal desires and societal pressures while on the most personal, rewarding and exhausting journey of motherhood.
