Moe Wakai

Online Residency 2022

Resume

Moe Wakai is a fiber and textile-based artist, focusing on dysfunctional weavings with embellishments, such as embroidery and stitching. Her works explore the idea of relationships and their development throughout time. Wakai also studies photography. Similar to her fiber works, she looks deeper into relationships with a series of photographs that document relationships through time. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago BFA in May of 2021, with a focus in Photography, and Fibers and Material Studies. Wakai is now based in Los Angeles, CA.

Artistic Statement

I extrovert through my photography, and introvert through my textiles. I extrovert by documenting relationships in me, my camera, the subject, and the conversations in between. I reflect in post-production. I introvert through rumination and planning, labor-intense creating, and the simple act of crafting.

I like to make people at ease; I like having a moment of introspection. I like pretty things that make me question myself. The lack of contradiction between opposites — simple and complex, introvert and extrovert, ease and conflict — is something I like to think others enjoy, too.

I want that feeling you get after secretly touching art in a gallery. The satisfaction of touch and the slight guilt that lingers in your fingertips. It’s that calm introspection that comes after, the small but sweet existentialism.
