Online Residency 2022
Biography
1983 – Born in Jaipur, India
2003-07 – Bachelor in Design (Fashion Communication) from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.
2007–present – Partner and co-founder at Tiffinbox, a brand and
communication design studio based out of India.
My partner and I took up entrepreneurial roles straight out of college. Tiffinbox is a culmination of our need to express freely our sense of aesthetic and belief in what design meant for us and what we could do for our clients.
Over the 16 years since inception the studio has grown in the standard and ethics of providing our clients with design solutions that are steeped in logical and creative thinking.
We worked out of a small residence cum studio space in Delhi till summer 2021. But since then we have shifted to a small village house in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand for better air, better food, better people, and better everything really.
My core competency lies in branding and illustration projects, though I am often pulled in to work on print projects as well from time to time. I am a huge proponent of design that’s simple, clean (minimal) and to the point.
When not ideating on client projects, I am busy making maps, mental and literal, for my next walk in the mountains.
One of my art projects (lockdown zine) was featured by Verve magazine’s Instagram page under their #vervescouts programme that “brings
thought-provoking talent into the spotlight”.
Artistic Statement
I create art to get away from design.
Client vagaries, deadlines, and the boredom of producing the same stuff over and over again saw me looking for a release in the form of art. Art where I am the sole controller of variables: what, how, where, when. Art where I speak mymind and am not bogged down by others’ expectations or feedback.
But the two are not separable. My design influences my art in the form of minimalism. At the same time my art loathes the digital veneer of my design and revolts in the form of accidental marks and layered reveals.
I have been drawing since childhood – first as participant of innumerable painting competitions in school, then as part of the design course in college, and finally for client projects – and while it still is an intrinsic part of the early stages of my work process, the final expression is through printmaking (linoprint). Although in some cases I have gone back to drawing and painting (gouache, pastels, ink) for the demands of economy and time. I love working with black to accentuate the starkness of my messages.
