Artist statement

As a photographer, a life is dominated by the in-betweens of perpetual movement. Yet, it is the moments of calm, little blips of tenderness amongst the toughness of a ruckus scape, that refresh me as an artist. The harmonious medley of tough and tender; like deep-fried-whatevers, crispy, yet soft and uniquely perfect inside.  A probable reason for this fondness of tiny refuges found in even the most unexpected of places, is my upbringing in a perpetually changing home.  With such constant impermanence, themes of time and belonging are jeopardized often, and that is what manifests itself in my photographic process and work.

Project

This year I am traversing from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, on a bicycle, through the end of spring until the end of summer.  I aim to fuse this raw venture with a tender and artistic endeavour, I am in the process of applying for grants to make it possible to buy lunch for 60 previously unknown people along the way.  As a means of collecting a cross-section of portraiture, I am employing the timeless gesture of sharing a meal with another.  The route that I am following parallels the infamously once named iron curtain, and I would like to stop and focus my work in at least two larger cities along the way, Belgrade being at the top of my list.  In a residency, I look to reflect and continue the project in a more static fashion, restore my physical self as well as my creative self, amongst other creators.
