PROJECT DESCRIPTION
After receiving the acceptance into the Belgrade residency given the ‘Artist on Standby’ as the theme I was already eager to create a work that has a conceptual research component as well as aesthetics. What is the ‘happening’ that is happening now? How has the global pandemic affected the artist that now has to be on standby? Throughout the pandemic along with climate change there has been this rational fear and void that coins the question, what will happen to our world with all of these unfortunate activities? The ocean which provides 50 percent of our oxygen is being destroyed daily. One of the most significant threats to the coral reef is pollution from coastal development, sewage treatment plant operations, dredging, agricultural and deforestation. (Moravchik, Barkley et, al). The concept of my work is to bring awareness to climate change and to elicit joy to the viewer. The normal for humanity has been an unfortunate pattern of sickness, death and masks. Psychologically this has taken a toll on humanity for this new cynical norm. I want to provide the audience with a clear reminder of the beautiful pockets of the world we have to take care of. I decided to create an experimental music ep titled “Coral Aurora” inspired by sounds of the coral reef. The execution of sound as a choice to execute my work was significant because the senses help take the viewer to that pocket of the world sort of like guided meditation. Since the work is experimental it gives room for further imagination without a voice as a guide. Speaking of imagination I also created an experimental music video with the same title, Coral Aurora. The music video is a visual for aesthetics as well as showing my process. It’s a visual reminder of how the Earth itself is an aesthetic and we need to preserve it by bringing awareness. If we can visually see what we have in front of us while conceptually bringing awareness to topics that affect us all like climate change we can do a better job at preserving it.
