PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Vulnerability and Shame are themes that are near and dear to my heart. Some say that the eyes are the window to the soul, but I see vulnerability in the expression of hands that reveal a truth of internal and emotional struggle. While facial features and expressions may be a created facade, and words may give false impressions, our nonverbal movements cannot hide our emotional sensitivities. I believe we try to deny our reactions to the reality of feelings of shame and vulnerability. Yet, the body exhibits what the face may try to conceal.
My works exhibit a striking tonal contrast that is influenced by chiaroscuro. This technique has added a dramatic and emotional dimension to my pieces while accentuating the dimensionality of the hands and gestures. The hands become as expressive as words, as they emerge from the dark mystery of charcoal – which forms a parallel with the chaotic mind that resists vulnerability.
