When did you realize that art is your path?
I was a super creative kid, so it’s always been part of my life
How do you balance your various projects since you are the Gallery director, a curator…?
It’s tough! I’ve adapted my practice to be more process-focused than exhibition-focused. Deadlines are useful, so I apply to opportunities when it feels realistic. It’s also really helpful to schedule time on the calendar to make work.
You choose new media to express yourself. Could you tell us about the process of creation? How long does it take to move from an idea to a piece of art?
It depends on the project. Often my work starts as research, and then the making of the artwork serves as a sort of thought process. Larger projects typically take several months to a year. Others are quick, usually when a thought makes me laugh and I want to make a short piece that reads like a joke or a pun. Those kind of works might only take a weekend or a few hours.
What are you trying to communicate with your art?
That also depends on the project, but often I’m trying to communicate something about human relationships with technology.
To what extent does the pandemic influence your depiction of art? Does it generate new inspiration?
It’s given me an excuse to explore mediums I haven’t worked with in a while. Sewing, comedy writing, music. Things that allow me to get away from the screen.
How do you feel about being involved in an online residency program? How important is it to stay connected with the international art community?
I’ve been involved with running an online residency (welcometomyhomepage.net) since 2014, so it’s been fun to be on the resident side of the equation! This has been an enjoyable experience. I’m glad to have met artists I wouldn’t have otherwise, learn about everyone’s art practice and the contexts they are working in.
What are your thoughts about the theme ‘artist on standby’? Tell us a bit more about your project…
I’m working with some aging camera equipment that has been on standby in my studio for quite a while now. Most of it I’ve inherited from various friends cleaning out their studios or closets. I’m in the process of coaxing them back into life, which is how I feel about my studio practice sometimes.
What do you want to achieve before things return to normal?
I’m actually checking my goal off this evening! As I type this, I’m waiting on my video file to export so I can send it off to a media festival and share it with the residency group.
Any future plans/projects?
I want to continue working with obsolete media from a futurist standpoint. Later this summer I’ll be working on a text-based game for a media jam.
