Belgrade Art Studio Residency

Interview – Serena Rossi – Belgrade Art Studio Online Residency

When I create a work, it is usually a series of phases from the idea to the project and finally to the realization.

I am more interested in ideation and production, for creativity and often difficult implementation. That is, it often happens that you think about one thing and in doing the implementation other results are produced then different phases of study and new work operations in progress must be done.

For my growth as an Artist curiosity and new knowledge are important, therefore the new stimuli that arise above all from moving, then from travel and exchanges with other artists, better if international because there are more different points to analyze.

What most fascinates me and inspires me living in Milan, therefore in the city, is precisely the adaptation of animals and man and plants to the metropolitan environment, often unsuitable. Studying this for two years I have come to deepen the issues of the fragile, lived in peripheral areas, and various difficulties. In this I found a great connection with the theme proposed in your online residence, Stand by.

Over the course of these two weeks I have produced a short video entitled Spazi con mie opere di fotopittopoesia, a new technique experimented in the pandemic years, that is, I take digital photographs then I elaborate them and add a short poetic text. I also plan to make a new installation representing in both works a real physical distance between beings or from the outside world. Fragile our contact with each other and sometimes this bond makes us suffer-

The other evaluates me, judges me, gives me or takes away value. In this way the other subjugates me and I, to free myself, I try to subjugate him “Only in love it seems that we can escape from this need of conflict” Who wants to be loved does not want to enslave being loved “He does not want to own an automaton, he wants to own a freedom like freedom”. Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) in his famous essay The Being and the Nothingness (1943; tr. Italian The Assayer 1964)

With the time of the pandemic we had to, we were forced, to tighten the spaces, to narrow the contexts, therefore to live new links with space and with the other. We lived from fear to mystery. I don’t know. Up to the unusual forced distance. Then new worlds and new realities have come together around us. To live in a new way.

Later, or during this experience of international interaction, skillfully organized by you, I dream of producing a choral video that is with pieces coming from everyone, different and then united according to my artistic logic of Stand By. It will always be Spaces, reduced, restricted, new, enlarged, international and exchanged. I hope to find consensus in the Thursday group.

A new way of interaction this online, born more after the pandemic, without physically moving from home or from the study but everyone where he is.

Although the classic method of physical interaction releases a greater feeling of exchange also online we can communicate.

I find that this dramatic post-pandemic period has changed us and our approach to the world, and we artists, as the most sensitive community, are the first to realise this.

The themes of my research have not changed because of the pandemic, or the serious war going on in Ukraine, but they have evolved and now I am fascinated by the theme of the sacred. In 2022 in fact I participated in the program Rodello Art with final group exhibition in the church of the Immaculate Conception in Rodello in the land of Langhe.

Or continue my study of animals, dogs and wolves to a greater extent.

I wouldn’t define my style in a specific channel, but I would say Contemporary because it comes from stimuli that I perceive every day. I always characterize my works with the use of materials not properly employed in fine arts such as commercial food boxes or body spray. Since 2012 I have been working alongside my artistic visual work with a parallel poetic literary production on the same themes with publication of poetic syllogists.
