Belgrade Art Studio Residency

Interview – Susana López Fernández – Belgrade Art Studio Online Residency

What made you want to become an artist? What motivates you to create?

I don´t know exactly, maybe when you become an artist you only follow your instinct. I studied Fine Arts and from the first moment I knew I wanted to create. It´s true it´s not always easy but I don´t to do another thing.

What’s my motivation? What happens in daily life. My fears, my worries, I would like to spread the message to live and enjoy  the present.

How did moving from one city to another influence your work? Tell us a bit more about your inspiration. … Where do these fascinating ideas come from?

I think that enriches me because it opens my mind and it offers different visions and cultures. Also, I am in contact with different cultural scenes and point of views and later all these ingredients I try to translate into a 2 dimensional work.

I think all the ideas for my work come from my interior, what I am worried about, old stories, memories, life and death, my fear of death since I was a child. I like big questions, these days I am fascinated by Greek and Indian philosophies.

To what extent has your everyday life as an artist changed during pandemics?

I stopped travelling and meeting people, I still don´t feel safe going to multitudinaria events.I miss the face to face, openings, art fairs, exhibitions, etc but they will come.

How do you feel about being involved in an online residency program? How important is it to stay connected with the international art community?

I am so happy for this opportunity. Our work is quite lonely and more during these days, so our meetings weekly are quite inspirational.

I love the opportunity to be in contact with other artists, also I think it is a great chance to meet people from around the world, meet the artist from Wuhan, Sixue, and discover all the artists from our group with multiple backgrounds.

What are your thoughts about the theme ‘artist on standby’? Tell us a bit more about your project…

I like the idea of the diary, as a way to be conscious of the significance of daily life, especially after these last two years when everything we presumed disappeared.

For me “artist on standby” is also a challenge to grow, to explore new areas, etc.

What do you want to achieve before things return to normal?

I am quite busy these days with the technical aspects of my web: SEO; marqueting, etc and I realised I love it.

Any future plans/projects?

Keep working. I am developing a new project where I am working with painting and photography.
