Artist statement

My artwork uses new and old technology to arouse suburban gothic nostalgia through shared experiences by children of the 1990’s. Often referencing pop culture, my work explores the varying relationships between everyday life and fine art. Having engaged subjects like horror movies, UFOs, and roadkill, my work reproduces a certain sense of public lower-middle class education, arranging it into new conceptually layered installations. I use a variety of materials and processes in each project, and the theme is often decided by the materials I find to work with. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. Each project often consists of multiple elements, often in a range of different media, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work.

Becoming an artist

I’m currently an MFA student at Boston University, and the artist residency experience I’m pursuing right now is a first for me. My career is beginning right now, so it’s extremely important to me to learn and experience and be shaped by as much as I can right now.
When it comes to motivation as an artist I’ve become a hunter. I’ve spent time waiting for it, calling for it, thinking it might come to me in a dream or as an epiphany but I’ve discovered that it’s something that can only be found through activity, trying new thing, talking to people, doing things, traveling to new places. Motivation can never be found where you’ve already been, it’s always one step ahead and leaves traces of itself that can be collected along the way, but to give up that hunt is to give up being an artist.
