Artist statement

In my artistic and creative experience I used different media such as music, video, installation, digital photography, drawing and painting, literature and storytelling, combining them through manipulation and interaction. The central theme of my artistic research is the desire to create deep sensory experiences. In my work, I try to involve sensations, feelings and thoughts and I wish that my art was a personal and inner experience. I would like to be able to bring out my creative interpretation of the present, trying to give more room for content than for the popular aesthetic or spectacular interfaces and trying to identify the right balance between artistic expression and expressive vehicle.

Project

I study distribution of energy in sound (voice) as a marker of emotions, focusing on the nonverbal features of speech. The basic idea is that distribution of sound energy in speech reflects the emotional state that a person is undergoing (or communicating). My current study seeks to investigate emotions and their correlation with sound. I am in the process of finalizing an immersive emotionally responsive art installation “sounding out”, incorporating a tool that analyses emotions in people speeches, detecting inner states by how they influence the distribution of energy in the audio signal. I also designed a second installation “seams” to exemplify each emotion and its analysis and detection process. Addressing the physical world and taking a phenomenological approach in my artistic research is significant, because what we experience through our body is the substrate for the appearance of our feelings, emotions and thoughts.

I designed an algorithm implemented in a Max/MSP patch the “energy band analyser”, to evaluate the distribution of energy in audio samples by dividing the spectrum of the voice samples in critical bands that is also how the basilar membrane works. I create this patch because a standard spectrum analyser would provide only a flow of instantaneous data. The standard analysers make impossible to compare sample to each other in the frequency and time domain at the same time, furthermore being in real time they don’t allow the collection of data for a subsequent comparison.

Within this patch I don’t have to choose which part of the sound to analyse, but I study it in its integrity. My research’s ontology is material and social, focused on three stages: first there is collecting recording of speeches conveying emotional states (the audio sample are collected from the web and from volunteers) the second stage is the analysis of the energy in these recordings, finally, I propose an artwork (installation) that gives a visual/audible form to the data extrapolated from the acoustic spectrum: an objectification, something new that re-works or transforms the original recording and energy in a different form. The investigation that I carried out until now is based on Italian and English speaker, my aim is to include in this project speeches in other languages in order to compare emotional marker in different languages and cultures. Collecting stories from many places around the world in order to detect similarities and differences.
