Robert Birkenes is a visual artist whose work explores movement and stillness, and connections among people, wildlife, and place. His work incorporates organic curves and textures inspired by nature and science, with a particular interest in impermanence and the beauty found in decay. His extensive travels as a former diplomat have influenced his interest in how familiar environments can be seen in new ways.

Robert first encountered Yugoslavia in the 1980s as an exchange and language student. The experience gave him a lasting affection for its people and cultures, which he now hopes to explore anew through art. During his residency at Belgrade Artist Studios, he plans to create plein air watercolors and relief prints inspired by traces of history found in local buildings and everyday life. Working alongside his sister, artist Kristin Birkenes, he will also explore how different perspectives can shape interpretations of the same scenes.
